Why This Region
Northern Kentucky sits at the center of one of the regions most affected by the opioid epidemic. Boone, Campbell, and Kenton counties have invested significantly in treatment infrastructure — and the result is a denser network of local resources than many comparably-sized regions.
The two-state geography matters. Kentucky and Ohio operate entirely separate Medicaid and treatment systems. A Campbell County resident may find that a Hamilton County, Ohio facility is physically closer but requires Ohio Medicaid enrollment. This directory clarifies which programs serve which residents under which coverage.
The Northern Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy (NKYODCP) covers Boone, Campbell, and Kenton counties and can connect residents with treatment vouchers, transportation assistance, and referrals: (859) 957-0038.
The NKY Agency for Substance Abuse Policy (NKY ASAP) covers 8 counties — including Grant, Gallatin, Carroll, Owen, and Pendleton — and offers treatment vouchers and transportation assistance for uninsured residents: (859) 577-2273.

Kentucky and Ohio are completely separate Medicaid systems. Kentucky Medicaid covers treatment at Kentucky-licensed facilities; Ohio Medicaid covers Ohio-licensed facilities. A Campbell County KY resident wanting to use a Cincinnati facility would typically need Ohio Medicaid or private insurance — or pay out of pocket. Some border providers accept both states' Medicaid.
Medical detox: 3–7 days. Residential: 28–90 days (Recovery Kentucky offers up to 6 months). IOP: typically 8–12 weeks at 3 sessions/week. MAT (Suboxone/methadone) is often indefinite — research consistently shows longer duration of MAT is associated with better outcomes. There is no single correct timeline.
